How to find the perfect foundation

I’m sure many of you would agree that we’ve all had issues on trying to find the right foundation. No woman wants to walk around wearing a foundation that’s completely mismatched for their skin but it’s such an easy mistake to make and I’m sure many of us in our own naivety have fallen victim to this mistake.

Most shops if not all have artificial lighting in store and this can be misleading when trying to find the right foundation colour. If you can, try to get near as much natural light as possible when testing colours as the appearance in artificial light and natural light will look remarkably different.

Where to test

I’ve noticed that many women use the back of their hand to find the right match. This is completely wrong as the skin on your hand and face are slightly different due to more sun exposure on the face. The area where you should be testing foundation is on your jaw line or to side of the face next to your ear.

Foundation on Jaw

Warm or Cool?

Identify whether you have Warm or  Cool undertones, this is key to finding the right match. The Beauty Department had a great post explaining ways to find out your undertones and selecting the right foundation accordingly.

It’s great to choose the perfect colour foundation but another equally important factor is choosing the right formula for your skin type. Even though you can get the colour matched perfectly to your skin, if you get the formula wrong it can look just as dreadful as getting the colour wrong. I guess having so many different types of foundations in so many different formulas on the market doesn’t really help the process of choosing the right one for your skin type. So I have a list of the main types of foundations out there and who they are better suited for.

Oil-Free Foundation

The aim of oil-free foundations are to keep the face matte and reduce oily appearance of the skin.

For? People who have oily skin and want a matte appearance.

Not for? People with dry skin and those who want a more dewy appearance.

Moisturizing Foundation

This sort of foundation will give a really healthy natural look and a little on the dewy side due to the moisturizing ingredients in the foundation.

For? People with Dry or Combination skin.

Not for? I wouldn’t recommend this to ladies with oily skin or acne prone skin.

Cream to Powder

This typically tends to be build-able and very easy to apply due to the creamy texture, will leave a subtle dewy appearance depending on the amount you use.

For? Those with Combination and Dry skin (but not too dry) as the cream can sometimes exaggerate the appearance of dry patches.

Not for? Ladies that have extremely oily skin as this will just contribute to overall oiliness and it will look shiny.

Tinted Moisturizers/Sheer Foundation

These types of foundations are generally light coverage, can be very sheer and will give you a dewy appearance. Most blend in easily just like a normal moisturizer and will suit nearly all skin tones.

For? Women who don’t really require foundation or very little coverage.

Not for? Ladies that need slightly heavier coverage and with quite oily skin as most are extremely moisturizing.

Mineral Powder

Comes in a powder form with light to heavy coverage and is buildable. Most of the time it gives a very natural ‘No Makeup’ appearance.

For? Suitable for most skin types.

Not for? Wouldn’t recommend for people with extremely dry skin as the powder may exaggerate the dry areas and it may not suit all women of colour as the finishing powders may result in an ashy appearance.

I have also found a cool website that helps you find foundation colour matches based on what you use now. It’s called Findation, give it a go girlies, this is how I found my perfect foundation but more on that later! Let me know your thoughts!

Know your skin, ask yourself these questions when buying new foundations.

  • How does your skin react to what you are using now?
  • Are you happy with your current foundation?
  • What would you like to gain out of a new foundation?
  • What type of skin do I have? Dry/Oily/Combo/Mature/Sensitive?

What are you tips and rules when you buy foundation?

Crushing on Bobbi

Hello Ladies,

I’ve been finding myself obsessing on Bobbi Brown, I’ve been lusting after many products but these are the top products on my lust list!

Bobbi Brown, Pot Rouge, Sheer Lip Colour, Long wear gel eyeliner

1. Long-Wear Even Finish Foundation – After reading reviews on this foundation I found myself yearning for it even more. The fact that it claims to last up to 12 hours, is oil-free, medium to full coverage, not to mention the colour is more yellow toned,  which is meant for me! I’ve already been matched up in store at John Lewis so it’s just a case of buying it!!

2. Sheer Lip Color – Ballet Pink – This reminds me of Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter, the best part claims to be ‘Luxurious butters and oils improve the overall condition of lips, instantly and over time’ mmmmm sounds lovely…

3. Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner – I really love Gel eyeliners, they have excellent staying power and are so easy and smooth to apply. This one is water-resistant and stays without a smear or crease! Again this product has had fab reviews!

4. Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheeks – Rose – As previously mentioned I have been obsessed with cream blushes and when I saw this one which is also multi-tasking I just had to add it to my list!

Have you tried any of the above? ? Favorites? Colours?

Bourjois Cream Blushes

Recently I’ve been quite obsessed with Cream blushes and have been wanting to buy and try pretty much all the cream blushes out there so when I was browsing Boots I just couldn’t resist trying the new cream blushes from Bourjois.

Left 04 - Sweet Cherry and Right 03 - Rose Tender

Left 04 – Sweet Cherry and Right 03 – Rose Tender

Firstly there are four shades in this collection but I only bought the two above. The other two shades are  Nude Velvet and Healthy Glow.

Sweet Cherry

Sweet Cherry

I love the small compact casing, it’s teeny tiny and it fits right into my make up bag. It’s slimmer then the other Bourjois blushes as it doesn’t need to accommodate a brush which is great!Left Swatch - Sweet Cherry and Right Swatch - Rose Tender

Left Swatch – Sweet Cherry and Right Swatch – Rose Tender

The blush claims to be ‘Incredibly blendable texture. Second skin feel’ and is ‘Cream to powder Technology’

The texture is creamy yet feels powdery, definitely ‘Cream to Powder feel’ and light and it just glides onto the skin so smoothly without displacing any makeup underneath and blends beautifully. It’s very much like primer consistency, so smooth and is just effortless to apply. It feels incredibly light on the skin and it is buildable for a heavier colour if needed.

I use my fingers when applying this blush but I’m sure a brush would work just fine, I also found that it lasted all day without any needs for touchups.

Overall I really love this blush, it does what it claims to do, the price is £7.99 – Give the quality of the formula and longevity I think it’s well worth the price. A great product and affordable and one that I will be reaching for over and over again.

Have you tried this blush? What are your thoughts?

Review: Bobbi Brown Corrector and Concealer

Review: Bobbi Brown Corrector and Concealer

Hello Ladies,
So recently I have noticed the appearance of my under eye circles becoming more apparent and my current concealing just wasn’t cutting the mustard anymore so I went out looking for a corrector/concealer and I ended buying Bobbi Brown’s Corrector and Concealer.
I’ve heard really great reviews about the corrector and concealer so I was really excited to try it out for myself. I went to John Lewis to get matched up and the lady in store did a really good job and matched me up perfectly.
Bobbi Brown – Corrector – Peach – John Lewis £18
It has a lovely creamy texture and a little goes a long way. My under eye circles aren’t that bad but I still need some coverage to cover up the blueish hues. The corrector does a fantastic job on lightening the area and neutralising the tones.
Bobbi Brown – Concealer – Honey – John Lewis £18
Again this has the same texture as the corrector and goes on smoothly. It doesn’t crease or move throughout the day and stays put.
I know that the corrector usually comes with a setting powder but to be honest I tried it in store and I didn’t really like the look or feel of it so I decided that I’d just go for the corrector and concealer separately and I haven’t had any problems, I just set the product with my normal powder.
Overall great products, they correct and conceal brilliantly, excellent staying power, the only pitfall for me is you don’t get an awful lot for what you’re paying for. I’ve only had this for a little of three weeks so I guess I’ll see how long it lasts! Oh and one more thing, the packaging I think is adorable, so cute and small with a tiny mirror and doesn’t take up much space at all!.

May Favourites!

Hello my lovely ladies,
Just a quick post about a few products that I loved in May. Gosh I can’t believe its mid June already! Where has time gone!!
Sleek Blush – Pomegranate
I’m really loving Sleek products at the moment and particularly their blushes. They are highly pigmented and you only need the tiniest amount on your brush. I love the packaging as well, as you can see its really small so you can just pop it into your handbag and it has a little mirror as well which is really handy.
The Body shop – Brow and Liner Kit – 03 – Brown & Black

I have been looking for a brow kit for my dark brows for a long time and usually I can only ever find brown to dark brown shades, which for me don’t really work as I have jet black eyebrows. So I found this in the Body shop and just had to get it and I absolutely love it. I mainly use the Black shade, the applicator I find it really good, it’s stiff and picks up the product really well and application is quick and easy. It lasts all day and I couldn’t be without it!

Gosh Intense Eye Liner Pen – 03 Brown
I have this eye liner in Black as well but lately I have been reaching for the brown for a natural day time look and I think it’s brilliant. It’s so easy and quick to use, no mess and dries quickly. The tip of the liner is fine and produces a lovely thin line so I can get it close to the lash line for a beautiful look.

The Body Shop – Radiant Highlighter
I’ve been looking for a liquid highlighter for quite some time and again I came across this one when browsing online and after reading really good reviews on the product I just couldn’t resist. It’s light and leaves a beautiful shimmer. It’s just perfect to finish off any look to give you a fantastic radiant glow. I love it!

Manuka Honey, Cinnamon and Nutmeg Face Mask…My Saviour

Hi Ladies,

So I know it’s been a while since I last posted and the reason for this is because there’s been a few things happen in my personal life recently which have occupied some of my time, but I’m back and hopefully with some interesting posts.

So recently I have been suffering from horrific acne and I couldn’t figure out what was causing the sudden flare up until after some experimenting found out that this was my M.A.C Studio Fix Fluid Foundation. So I immediately stopped using it and moved on to my good old Revlon Colorstay foundation. I was left with some really awful cystic acne of the side of my cheeks and I was on a mission to get rid of them!

So I came across Manuka Honey, Cinnamon and Nutmeg face mask through Pinterest and I was so desperate that I was willing to try anything and I am so glad that I did. I have quickly listed short facts known about the ingredients below.

1. Manuka Honey – 2 Tsps

Sainsbury’s Manuka Honey 10+ 340G – £9.99

3. Ground Cinnamon – 1/2 Tsp

4. Ground Nutmeg – 1/2 Tsp

  • Manuka Honey has properties that contain anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and the ability to aid in healing and repair damaged skin.
  • Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties and it also brings blood and oxygen to the surface on the skin and unclogs the pores.
  • Nutmeg is also anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial and also dries out pimples.
How to..

Mix all the ingredients in a clean container to form a thick consistency (thick enough where it won’t slide down your face). Now I have to stress this point, this is not an over night cure! This took about 4 weeks to clear my skin up and this involved using this mask every single day. It was a strict regime that involved no other products, if you feel that you need to use your standard spot treatments as well then go for it.

The Results

I found that the mask was drawing the acne to the surface so I could extract (EWWWW) the gunk inside. Once that was done the every day use of the mask helped heal the spots quicker and helped clear up the scarring as well.

Even though my acne it completely gone, I still use the mask everyday. I find that my skin is amazingly soft, the softest it’s been in a long time. It is time consuming and you won’t see results straight away but what I love about this mask is that it’s natural, chemical free and not as harsh as other spot treatments.

So ladies give it a go and let me know the results!
